Circle Pond Farm
Our Story
The farm begun with Tony's great grandfather Calvin Eisnor in 1865, he was a sea captain who owned two schooners with which he made regular cargo runs to Halifax throughout the late 1800's. His son Clayton and wife Hazel took over the farm in the early 1900's, raising eight children, the youngest of which was Tony's father Edsel. (the picture in the background is of Hazel on the farm in 1957 with a Plymouth barred rock hen and her chicks). It was Edsel who created the large circle pond with an island in the middle for his ducks to nest on in the 1960's and operated the farm until 2000 when Tony and his wife Corinne took over and with the help of their three children have operated it to this day. It has been in the family now for four generations.
In the early days it was a means to help feed the family and earn a meager income. Over the years the focus has changed. When we went to buy our first chickens we were surprised and disappointed to find that we only had a choice between red or black hybrid layers from the local feed store. We were hoping to have some more traditional varieties that better reflected the age of our farm for our backyard flock and while egg production was important we were looking for other attributes as well. We were fortunate to find various breeders through the Nova Scotia Purebred poultry association as well as ordering eggs from Ontario, BC and as far away as Texas to acquire the breeds we wanted. We now breed purebred heritage poultry raising many of the dual purpose birds that were popular on small Nova Scotia farms a century ago.
Our Mission
At Circle Pond Farm, we believe in the importance of preserving heritage breed poultry and sustainable farming. Our farm is dedicated to raising a diverse range of poultry, emphasizing their well-being and quality. Through transparent practices and community involvement, we aim to educate others about the benefits of keeping heritage breeds.
