Silver Laced Wyandotte

I think these are some of the nicest birds we have ever kept.  Aside from having striking black-and-white lacing they have a very low rose comb and dense feathering so both roosters and hens are quite cold hardy.  They are layers of large brown eggs and lay approximately 200 a year if conditions are right.  They tend to be calm, gentle and easy going backyard birds. They were originally developed in America in the 1870’s as a solid dual purpose bird with most hens weighing around  2.5 kgs and roosters  weighing 3.5 kgs.

Speckled Sussex

The Speckled Sussex are an older dual purpose breed appearing in their first poultry exhibition in 1845 although the breed is believed to be much older. They originated in Sussex County, England and are an ever popular dual purpose breed.  Circle Pond Farm has kept them for about 20 years and we are continually adding new blood to our lines.  Their plumage is a deep mahogany brown with white, black-tipped speckles.   They lay approximately 200 medium to large light brown eggs a year if conditions are right.  They tend to be calm, friendly and curious birds.  Hens on average weight of around 3 kgs and roosters about 4 kgs.  They are cold hardy and are excellent free rangers; they are good for eggs, meat and pets.

Barred Plymouth Rock

There have been Barred Plymouth Rock on our farm for over a century. (Not the same ones of course) These were a breed Tony’s grandmother kept, as did most other Nova Scotia small farms in the late 19th and early 20th century.  They were originally developed in the United States in the mid 1800’s and the breed came north to Canada from there.   Today there are many varieties of Plymouth Rocks; White, Pencilled, Columbian and Partridge, the Barred Rock was their common ancestor, all the others came from them.   What made them so popular was their broodiness, cold hardiness (due to early feathering), as well as their production of large brown eggs.  Being a dual purpose bird my grandmother could  gather eggs from them in the morning and then have a decent sized baked chicken for supper with the hens weighing on average 3.5 kgs and the roosters weighing up to 4 kgs.  Barred rocks can be particularly long lived, we have had several hens over the years that have lived to 9 years old and still produce eggs.
